How to Use a Condom
Whether it’s your first time or you’re looking for a refresher, here’s how to use a condom correctly. Quick guides for both external and internal condoms.
External Condoms
Worn on the penis.
- Check the package. Look for the expiration date and any damage. Pinch the package — you should feel a small air bubble. If it’s bad, toss it.
- Open carefully. Remove the condom from the package without using teeth or sharp objects.
- Pinch the tip. Gently pinch the condom tip and place it over the head of the penis. Retract the foreskin if necessary.
- Roll it down. Unroll the condom down the shaft to the base of the penis.
- Add lube as desired. Water- or silicone-based lubricant works best.
- Hold and withdraw. Immediately after ejaculation, hold the condom at the base and withdraw while still erect.
- Dispose properly. Throw the condom in the trash and wash your hands with warm water and soap.
Internal Condoms
Worn inside the body. Can be used for vaginal or anal sex.
- Check the package. Confirm the expiration date and look for damage. Pinch — you should feel an air bubble.
- Open carefully. Remove the condom from the package.
- Pinch the inner ring. Squeeze the sides of the inner ring at the closed end.
- Insert. For anal sex: insert into the rectum, remove the inner ring, and leave the outer ring about an inch outside the anus. For vaginal sex: insert into the vagina as far as it will go, leaving the outer ring about an inch outside. Extra lube helps with insertion.
- Apply lube. Water- or silicone-based.
- Guide and check. Guide your partner’s penis or toy into the condom and make sure the outer ring stays outside the body.
- Twist and remove. Immediately after sex, twist the outer ring to contain any semen and slowly remove the condom.
- Dispose properly. Throw it in the trash.
